BioBlitz: Studying Biodiversity – Register
Facilitated by Paula Phillips (from Clearview High School)
Studying biodiversity is a topic that naturally lends itself to many different sciences, such as biology, ecology, and environmental science. Discovering biodiversity does not require an exotic trip, expensive equipment, or a Ph.D. Biodiversity is all around and can be found anywhere if you know how to look for it.
This workshop will teach you to run a BioBlitz with your high school students (though all teachers are welcome as BioBlitz is for all grade levels). A BioBlitz is identifying different species in a given area in a short amount of time. Get students involved with citizens’ science and out of the classroom with a hands-on inquiry-based lesson.
In the workshop, we will be using an app called Seek. Having it downloaded on your phone before the workshop is helpful.

Making Biology Labs Inquiry-Based – Register
Facilitated by Chris Resch (from STEMteachersNYC)
Many biology teachers notice that lab experiences are cookie-cutter in nature. But do they have to be? If you are a biology teacher and want to see a glimpse of how these labs could be made interactive and Socratic in nature, thus engaging students and promoting learning, then this is the workshop for you! Join us as we explore four labs and see how they can be taught in a more inquiry-based way, enhancing engagement and scaffolding . Participants can expect to perform these labs as “students” and witness teaching strategies that emphasize the inquiry nature of science as well as leave with classroom ready resources!

Multiple Represenations in High School Physics – Register
Facilitated by Kathy Harper (Case Western Reserve University) and Jeremy Secaur (from Elyria High School and STEMteachersCLE)
Learn why and how we use multiple representations of concepts in introductory physics courses to improve students’ conceptual understanding and problem solving skills in this 3-hour workshop on the campus of Case Western Reserve University.

Adding Fluids to Your Curriculum (Designed for AP Teachers) – Register
Facilitated by Bob Engles (St. Vincent-St. Mary) and Michael Lerner (Beachwood High School and STEMteachersCLE)
AP Physics 1 will soon include fluids, and, for many of us, it’s been a long time since we’ve learned about fluids in college. We will take the time to build a model of fluids through multiple labs and scaffolded problem sets that work well in the AP Physics 1 curriculum. Registration includes lunch! Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet!
